What is Cover-Ups?
Cover-up(s) are acts or attempts to hide wrong doings, scandals and incompetence which are more reprehensible than the original acts. It involves two parties, the original perpetrator(s) and the accomplice(s) who shields the perpetrator(s). The accomplice(s) are more dangerous than the perpetrator(s) because the accomplice(s) acts wilfully, deliberately and consciously after knowing the relevant facts and results of the original misdeeds. And in certain cases the accomplice(s) will end-up becoming more evil than the original perpetrator.

Why Do Individual and Entities Practice Cover-Ups
Lately, there has been wide coverage especially in the International tabloids of "predator priests" who preyed on children. The Boston Globe in its article entitled "A history of secrecy, coverups in Boston Archdiocese" has this to say: "Church documents, official testimony, and victim interviews gathered over the past year paint an extraordinary picture of secrecy and deception in the Boston Archdiocese; a culture in which top church officials coddled abusive priests and permitted them to molest again, while stonewalling or paying off the victims of that abuse."

Now this revelation by the Boston Globe of the cover-up(s) of Boston Archdiocese is only one of the numerous exposures that are taking place now. Here we have a situation where so called "holy men" of a "holy Church" perpetrated molestation and rape of children entrusted in their care. And these criminal acts were covered-up by their superiors who according to the Boston Globe practiced "a culture in which top church officials coddled abusive priests and permitted them to molest again, while stonewalling or paying off the victims of that abuse." Why did the top officials cover-up for the predator priests? Why do cover-up(s) take place in the face of even criminal acts in so called established and reputable entities? What is the core motive for cover-up(s)?
The core motive for cover-up(s) is to save the existing reputation and public image of the entity in which the criminal perpetrators operate. When a crime like molestation or rape took place in a reputable entity like Boston Archdiocese, the first thought was not concern for the traumatized victims or the prosecution of marauding priests. The first concern was to save the public image and reputation of the Church. If saving the public image and the reputation of the Church was not the main concern, there wouldn't be the cover-ups that are being exposed now. So, cover-ups are practiced to hide wrong doings so as to protect the public image and reputation of an entity.
But cover-up(s) are not the solution to saving the public image and reputation of an entity. The act of cover-up(s) goes to show that individuals and authorities that should be correcting wrong doings have instead become accomplices to these crimes. Their act of cover-up(s) is more reprehensible than the original acts of the predator priests. In trying to save the public image and reputation of the Church, the accomplice(s) have increased and worsen the taint that is now wide open for the whole world to see. If these accomplices can cover-up molestation and rape of children in the Church, what else are they capable of in the name of saving the public image and reputation of the Church?
By the way, what public image or reputation can a Church like Boston Archdiocese portray after these scandals? If the Church has any sort of remorse, it should shut-up by not giving excuses, admit its wrong doings, initiate and maintain prosecution of the criminals involved, and seek forgiveness from the victims publicly while compensating them in the most reasonable manner. The Church should also draw-up policies of zero tolerance for predator priests and accomplices of these predator priests. The church should worry more about practicing the faith it preaches than saving the already tainted public image and reputation.
The problem with cover-ups is that it shifts the core focus and concern from the victims to its own collective public image and reputation. It doesn't care how many persons suffer or are in misery, it only cares about its own survival. Cover-up(s) reveals the ugly-side of collective ego that is prepared to sacrifice the innocent for it own interest. When this kind of behaviour takes place, the public should decide whether they are going to continue to tolerate and accommodate them or put a stop to them. No Church is so holy that it cans cover-up crimes with impunity. If we allow such behaviours to continue, we would be allowing ourselves to revert to the mediaeval ages when the Church insisted the earth was flat.

What Are The Impacts Of Cover-Ups?
Cover-up(s) in any area of humanity and in any form is a downright degrading act that victimizes for its own selfish interest. There are at least six significant impacts of cover-ups:
The lost of trust of authorities that one looks-up to as trustworthy. Lost of trust affects any real and sincere relationships that can exist. How would parents allow their children to be altar boys to priests that they can't trust? How can students trust their faculty that covers-up unethical practices of their colleagues? How can employees trust bosses who cover-up sexual harassments?
Authorities that are supposed to be guardians and protectors become the predators of those who are entrusted to their care. It creates criminals and victims.
Cover-ups leads to more misdeeds like white-washing, discrediting the innocent, falsification of facts, suppression of dissent and abuse of authority.
Cover-ups create sufferings, miseries and injustice to countless innocent and persons who are at a disadvantage. It creates lambs that are silenced for the slaughter.
Cover-up(s) becomes a tool to the corrupt and those who abuse their authority.
Cover-up(s) are damaging to the holistic values of societies. It creates shades of seeming acceptable criminality where there is none.

Can Cover-Ups Be Justified?
As the term speaks for itself, cover-ups are meant to hide something that the accomplice doesn't want others to know. The end does not justify the mean. Individuals and entities who are habitual accomplice to cover-up(s) are apt at finding all the right reasons for their wrong motives. If God himself can be used by them as a means to their end, they would do so. Nothing is sacred to them.
If something needs to be done properly, then there is no need for cover-up(s). If an error takes place, it needs to be corrected and resolved. If a crime takes place, the victim deserves justice and the criminal deserves his punishment. It is only because one seeks to do evil to cover-up another evil, cover-ups cannot be justified. No right reasons can justify the wrong motives. Cover-up(s) are unacceptable because:
