October 2009 has been an incredibly turbulent ride financially. The stock exchange has been hit hard, the dollar is down and we're still trying to recover from the worldwide recession. In a recent USA today poll conducted recently it was found that although two-thirds of Americans expected to donate the same amount or more in the coming year as they did in the past year, 72% said their finances affect their philanthropy.

One of the most reassuring signs is asked again later in the same USA today poll. When asked how much they are planning on donating to charities in 2010, 51% responded with the same amount and a whopping 26% said they were planning on contributing more!

In economic downturns it never hurts to stay in touch with the donors you know for contributions. Three Indian judges today ruled that the disputed religious site in Ayodhya, claimed by both Muslims and Hindus, should be shared by both communities. In one of the longest awaited and most controversial judgments in India's history, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court decided against the claim by the Muslim community that they should be allowed to rebuild a 16th century mosque demolished by Hindu extremists in 1992.
The destruction of the mosque, known as the Babri Masjid, 18 years ago sparked some of India's worst religious rioting since independence, leading to over 2,000 deaths and widespread rioting between Hindus and Muslims in many cities, including Delhi and Mumbai. Today's decision is being seen as a crucial test of India's commitment to secularism and rule of law.
The site has for years been heavily policed. Hindus destroyed the Mosque, in an act widely seen as violent desecration, as they believe historically that the Ayodhya mosque, built in 1528 by the Mughal Emperor Babur, had been erected at the birthplace of Rama more than 150 years previously. The conflict was aggravated in 1949 when idols of Rama appeared in the mosque. Hindu extremist groups and the BJP then exploited the issue to build mass popular support in the 1980s. As is often the case in India, religion has been politicized.
Awaiting the decision and hoping to avoid mass rioting between the two communities, schools and offices remained shut across India as a huge security operation involving hundreds of thousands of troops and paramilitaries across the country got underway. Police arrested more than 10,000 people to prevent them from inciting violence, while another 100,000 had to sign affidavits saying they would not cause trouble after the verdict, officials said. Helicopters hovered over holy sites in the state as people entering temples were checked with metal detectors. The government also extended its ban on bulk texting to stop people from sending mass messages that could incite violence. Over 40,000 police fanned out across the city of Mumbai, which erupted in anti-Muslim riots and retaliatory bombings after the mosque's demolition in 1992, but has played host to scattered peace marches in recent days. In Hyderabad, capital of the southern Andhra Pradesh state, authorities deployed more than 20,000 additional police. Some 460 arrests to stop possible violence were made, while liquor stores were closed and religious processions and meetings were barred across the country.
The timing is unfortunate, only three days before the Commonwealth Games opening in Delhi, and today's decision poses another security threat to the thousands of athletes and dignitaries already in India. More, including Prince Charles, are due to arrive before the opening ceremony this weekend. Ayodha is around 350 miles east of the Indian capital.
Sonia Gandhi, the president of the center-left Congress party, asked Indians to accept the judgment. "I request you keep faith in the Indian judiciary and maintain peace, mutual respect and brotherhood at any cost. Emotional unity is the greatest strength of India," Gandhi said.
"There should be no attempt whatsoever made by any section of the people to provoke any other section or to indulge in any expression of emotion that would hurt the feelings of other people," the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, said in an advertisement published in Indian newspapers.
The passions roused by the issue have threatened India's multi-ethnic, secular democracy. It will be a measure of Indian tolerance that peace rather than violence is the reward. Meanwhile, the country is on tenterhooks for the next 24 hours to see how the communities react. One hopes that a more civilized and tolerant society will be the dominant force.

Now this revelation by the Boston Globe of the cover-up(s) of Boston Archdiocese is only one of the numerous exposures that are taking place now. Here we have a situation where so called "holy men" of a "holy Church" perpetrated molestation and rape of children entrusted in their care. And these criminal acts were covered-up by their superiors who according to the Boston Globe practiced "a culture in which top church officials coddled abusive priests and permitted them to molest again, while stonewalling or paying off the victims of that abuse." Why did the top officials cover-up for the predator priests? Why do cover-up(s) take place in the face of even criminal acts in so called established and reputable entities? What is the core motive for cover-up(s)?
The core motive for cover-up(s) is to save the existing reputation and public image of the entity in which the criminal perpetrators operate. When a crime like molestation or rape took place in a reputable entity like Boston Archdiocese, the first thought was not concern for the traumatized victims or the prosecution of marauding priests. The first concern was to save the public image and reputation of the Church. If saving the public image and the reputation of the Church was not the main concern, there wouldn't be the cover-ups that are being exposed now. So, cover-ups are practiced to hide wrong doings so as to protect the public image and reputation of an entity.

Most people only think about large companies when they think about harmful pollutions that enter the environment. It is true that the big companies who participate in non-green activities do produce an extremely large amount of pollution but so do residents from their own homes. If individuals just make small changes to their daily activities then the damage done to our world will be reduced greatly. If everyone did their parts my changing some small aspect of their daily routine to be greener then the condition of our environment would be left in a healthier state.
No one is trying to have a house that is too cold or too hot so that they are not comfortable, but their energy usage can be reduced by changing the thermostat by a couple of degrees every season. Instead of setting your thermostat at your ideal temperature it can be turned down a little bit more during the winter instead of remaining at full blast which allows the furnace to rest for a while or by increasing the temperature a little in the summer for the same reason to give the furnace a small break. This helps with the overall health of the environment and it will also save individuals money.
The air conditioning does not have to be used as soon as the temperature starts to increase; a greener and cheaper alternative would be to turn on fans. Fans require an amount of energy that is about 98 percent less than what central air unit's use. Don't continue to use the fans if it is so hot that you feel like you are in a sauna, but they should be used for the first couple of weeks that that temperature starts to increase. This act will drastically reduce the amount of energy consumed by your home, which is great for our earth and limited resources.
In order to do laundry in a greener way wash your clothes in cold water instead of hot whenever you can. A large percentage of the energy that is used by a washing machine is used to heat up the water so by washing your laundry in cold water a large amount of energy will be saved and money as well.
Long hot showers are nice and may feel extremely good if your body is sore but the environment does not like them so much. A green shower lasts between 10 to 15 minutes. This again will reduce the amount of energy used.
One aspect of living a green lifestyle is about reducing the amount of energy you use every day by the settings used on your thermostat and by using cold water instead of hot whenever you can.
